WASHINGTON - iSportsWire -- The tribute recognizes Gibson's extraordinary impact as a trailblazing athlete and cultural pioneer. As the final honoree in the U.S. Mint's American Women Quarters Program, Gibson's inclusion marks a powerful moment in American history one that celebrates her influence on sports, equality, and representation.
Representatives of the Estate and community partners participated in symbolic visit to the U.S. Mint Coin Store to acknowledge the official release. Special guests include Althea's Estate Administrator Michelle Tatum-Curry, Mrs. Cora Masters Barry, and trailblazing sports broadcaster Jayne Kennedy Overton, who was on her national book tour for her memoir Plain Jayne. Kennedy Overton's own groundbreaking achievements as one of the first women and first Black woman, to host a major network sports program mirror Gibson's legacy of breaking barriers.
The community celebration features remarks from civic leaders and youth performances paying tribute to Gibson's life. Attendees also receive commemorative Althea Gibson quarter. A symbolic coin pour will serve as the emotional high point of the program, representing Gibson's permanent place in U.S. history.

The United States Mint officially released the 2025 American Women Quarters™ honoring Althea Gibson on October 21, 2025. As the 20th and final coin in the four-year Program, the design celebrates Gibson's unparalleled athletic excellence and her historic barrier-breaking achievements.
"It is fitting that someone so talented in so many areas closes out our program," said United States Mint Acting Director Kristie McNally. "Althea Gibson's accomplishments reflect her tenacity and dedication to the pursuit of her dreams."
The reverse of the coin depicts Gibson poised with a tennis racket and ball beside a net. Inscriptions include "ALTHEA GIBSON" and "TRAILBLAZING CHAMPION."
The Southeast Tennis and Learning Center founded by Mrs. Cora Masters Barry and long recognized as a hub for youth empowerment hosts the community-focused tribute.
"To celebrate Althea on a coin is truly historic," said Michelle Tatum-Curry, Administrator of The Estate of Althea Gibson and Founder of the Althea Gibson Sports & Education Foundation. "This recognition continues Althea's place in U.S. history, and we are grateful to Mrs. Barry and the SETLC for honoring her legacy."
