DALLAS - iSportsWire -- In response to requests from local responders, Footprint Project activated our Solar Energy Rapid Response Team (SERRT) to support Texas's recovery from Winter Storm Uri. Beginning this week (February 21), Footprint Project is deploying solar equipment to power mobile communication and remote charging needs for the Information Technology Disaster Resource Center (ITDRC) and Fayette County Emergency Management (FCEM). The Footprint Project team is remotely coordinating equipment shipments to our implementing partner Sail Relief Team (SRT), that is on the ground in Texas. SRT is collecting donated solar equipment provided by Footprint Project and assembling mobile solar systems in Dallas, Texas. The solar equipment will power communications equipment and refrigeration for first responders, partner relief organizations, and community mutual aid groups.

The state of Texas is currently reeling from historic storm conditions that have caused emergency and water needs across the state. On Tuesday February 23, over 23,585 people remain without power due to damaged power lines and nearly half the state is facing issues with water supply according to the Texas Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD). Disaster recovery efforts are expected to continue into March, with compounding challenges presented by COVID-19 and future spring storms. Mobile power remains a persistent challenge for professional and community responders alike.

Footprint Project's mobile solar deployments will take place in Dallas, Fayette County and other areas in Texas as the recovery situation develops. Site assessments began on February 17, battery shipments began on February 18, and the pick-up of solar equipment began on February 19. As equipment arrives in Dallas, it will be assembled into mobile turn-key solar generators and dispatched to fit first responder needs.

Mobile solar and energy storage systems can work independently, or integrate with generators on site to extend fuel reserves and save resources. They also reduce CO2 and particulate emissions from emergency response hubs, which is of particular importance for vulnerable populations.
