Canadian Innovation Continues to Shape the Playing Surface for Nearly Half of NHL Teams
LONDON, Ontario - iSportsWire -- ONTARIO, CANADA – Sports trivia time: What do nearly half of NHL teams have in common?
It has everything to do with an essential element of the game that rarely receives much public attention: the playing surface in each team's home arena.
That's right—nearly half of all NHL teams play on an ice surface that has been expertly installed and maintained by technicians using a Canadian invention: Level-Ice, which is celebrating a big anniversary in 2025.
"It's hard to believe it's been 25 years," said Level-Ice president Rob McIntosh. "When we created the Level-Ice system, we knew it had the potential to make a real impact on ice rink maintenance. To see how it's been adopted and implemented around the world is a testament to its innovation."
Level-Ice is a laser leveling system that integrates with ice resurfacers, providing real-time data to the technician. The beam that projects from the transmitter to the receiver helps analyze ice thickness and controls the ice level via automatic cutting-blade adjustment, resulting in smooth, even ice.

"The reality is, achieving consistent quality of an ice surface—especially when multiple operators share resurfacing duties—is a big challenge for arenas," explained McIntosh. "Being able to program settings keeps everything accurate and uniform, while saving time, reducing equipment wear and reducing water and energy consumption."
The system is a custom-fit add-on to most top-tier ice resurfacers.
Despite its growing popularity, it still seems surreal when McIntosh—a huge hockey fan himself—spots a Level-Ice system in the wild.
"To see something that is created at our headquarters in Ontario, being used on rinks of some of the NHL's most successful teams … it's pretty cool," he said.
