PEMBROKE, Mass. - iSportsWire -- Peak Physical Therapy & Sports Performance, a South Shore practice specializing in unique programs that provide comprehensive treatment in orthopedic, spine and sports medicine specialties, recently partnered with the Pembroke Titan Football and Cheerleading Program (PTFC) to pre-screen youth athletes for baseline concussion assessments for use in the event of an injury.
Pre-season screening included: Pulse oximetry monitoring; Postural stance assessment; Range of motion and strength of the neck/shoulder muscles; Reflex assessment; Ocular function assessment (eyes) for tracking objects; and Balance and coordination assessment on even and uneven surfaces
These evaluations are baseline assessments prior to the season. If at any time during the season a child sustains any type of injury, another evaluation will be performed by one of the many Peak physical therapists trained in concussion management. The assessments can then be used to assess whether medical treatment is needed and when a child can safely return to sports activities.
"We are pleased to partner with PTFC and their families in this important pre-screening." said Eric Edelman, PT, owner of Peak Physical Therapy & Sports Performance. "The concern over sports injuries and concussions should be taken seriously by parents, coaches and sports programs and we are pleased to assist the club in maintaining a safe environment for children to play."
