Ten year old Reef McMeeking breaks 100-yard freestyle record

ORMOND BEACH, Fla. - iSportsWire -- Reef McMeeking, who swims for Hydro4 Swimming, broke the nearly 16-year-old 100-yard freestyle Florida LSC State record at the 2021 Speedo Holiday Classic in Gainesville, Florida, with a time of 56.07.

This year Reef not only broke Murphy's 100-freestyle state record, but he also broke 3 more state records, the 20-year standing 50-yard breaststroke by nearly a second with a time of 32.74, the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 37.46, and the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:12.92.

The 10-year-old started swimming when he was 4 years old. "He just jumped in one day while his older brother, Kai, was swimming practice. We couldn't keep him out of the water," said his mother Ragan McMeeking.

Reef is one of 3 brothers who each swim competitively for Hydro4 Swimming. Reef and his brother Kai both won High Point for Florida Age Group Championships when they were 10.

When asked what motivates him to swim, Reef said "I just love it, I just want to win and beating my brother is always good!"

Reef is not the only Hydro4 swimmer to break a state record. Teammate Sarah Stegall holds the 10 and under record in the 50-yard breaststroke with at time of 32.22. Hydro4 Swimming was named one of the top age group teams in the country for 2021. The team's Head Coach, Corey McMeeking (Reef's father) was also recognized as one of the top 50 age group coaches of the Year in the US.

When asked how he feels about his sons' accomplishments Coach Corey says "I'm proud of him. We don't put expectations on him. We just want him to enjoy the sport and the process."
